Tale of Two Quarterbacks
03-04-02
I’m Chuck Wilson with an ESPN Radio Extra Point,
Here is a tale of two quarterbacks, Trent Dilfer and Elvis Grbac.
In 2000, Trent Dilfer takes over as starter for the Baltimore Ravens. His quarterback rating is just under 77. He throws 12-TD passes to 11-interceptions, but the team, led by the defense, wins the Super Bowl.
The Ravens decide they can do better. They jettison Dilfer and sign free agent Elvis Grbac for big money. With KC, Grbac had thrown for more than 4,000-yds with 28-TDs and 14-INTs and a QB Rating near 90 ...clearly an upgrade, right?
Meanwhile, Dilfer has to wait patiently for a job, finally signing as a back-up in Seattle. But he gets his chance, is 4-0 as a starter, improves his rating to 92, and at 19-1 in his last 20-starts, HE becomes a hot free agent and gets a big signing bonus to stay with the Seahawks.
As for Grbac...he has a poor season, says no to a big salary cut, and gets dumped by the Ravens.
And now he’s the one having trouble finding a team. That’s today’s NFL.
